14 Feb

Verbose ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale may have called a thousand games by now, but his “Awesome-with-a-capital-A” TV career began at DePaul University.

On Dec. 5, 1979, Dick arrived at old Alumni Hall as part of ESPN’s broadcast team covering the match-up between the Blue Demons men’s basketball team and the University of Wisconsin Badgers.

Watch Dick’s first words as an analyst at Alumni Hall and relive a little bit of DePaul basketball history.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

“It was so long ago Terry Cummings was a freshman for coach Ray Meyer….

“The Blue Demons, ranked No. 10 in the country, beat the Badgers that night, 90-77.

“In the previous season, DePaul had finished third in the NCAA tournament.

“The starters for Vitale’s first game broadcast were Teddy Grubbs, Jim Mitchem, Cummings, Mark Aguirre and Clyde Bradshaw for DePaul….”

Alumni Hall, which opened on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus in 1956, was torn down in 2000.
