DePaul Students Get Laughs

18 Feb

No one likes to be laughed at — unless they’re trying to be funny! Eight DePaul University students are doing just that as members of the Depaul improv comedy troupe, The Cosby Sweaters.

Sarah Pappalardo (CMN ’07, LAS MA ’08) came to Chicago for improv and so, while a student at DePaul, she decided there just had to be a university improv team! With the help of Chicago’s pH Productions, Sarah founded The Cosby Sweaters at DePaul. She says, “We used to get excited about one big show per quarter.”

The Cosby Sweaters: Josh Arntz, Tom Dean, Kim Garvey, Alex Haney, Mike Juen, Brian Lonergan, Pete Parsons and Brian Wright

Since then the team has become increasingly popular — doing three to four shows per week! And in October 2008, the Cosbys earned third place at the National College Improv Competitions’s Midwest Regionals.

Current member Kim Garvey describes being on the troupe: “It’s really a blast to get to play with a group that understands each other and tries to make each other laugh.” She also notes, “We’ve gotten some amazing opportunities that a lot of professional teams would love to get.”

Each fall, the team holds auditions to fill spots left vacant by graduating members. And although players leave the team as they earn their diplomas, several former members are planning to perform alongside the current lineup during the Cosby’s “Alumni Reunion Show” on March 5.

So what about founder Sarah? After the Cosbys, she stayed busy writing for and performing in the serial play/soap opera “The Ville,” and performing with the improv troupes The Beatbox and Chicago Improv Foundation’s Storybox. She also served as a musical director at Donny’s Skybox. Now she’s in New York “doing the writing thing.” Sarah won’t make it back for the reunion show, but she says, “It warms my heart that it’s happening.”
