On Sunday, March 1, DePaul University women’s basketball coach Doug Bruno is jumping into a freezing cold Lake Michigan…

Of course, he’s doing it for a good cause!

This year marks the 9th Annual Chicago Polar Plunge in support of the Special Olympics. Coach Bruno has been involved with the Special Olympics as a basketball coach and volunteer since the mid-’70s. In a recent press release, he says:

“The concept is simple.  When you work with athletes like I do every day that have been blessed with such physical and mental attributes – it is something that is a gift a gift from God, and those physical and mental attributes should never be taken for granted… The Special Olympics takes the Olympics concept and ideals to its most well intended and full inclusion. “

Coach Bruno will take his first Polar Plunge with one of his long-time basketball managers, sister-in-law and God child, Maureen Dillon, a former Special Olympics athletic. If you’re interested in supporting the coach and the cause, check out Coach Bruno’s Fundraising Page.

If you’re crazy enough to be taking the plunge yourself, let your fellow Blue Demons know — just leave us a comment! And we’ll be expecting photographic proof. Be sure to upload your photos to the DePaul Spirit Flickr group.

Oh, and good luck with that hypothermia. 😉
