from DePaul students for close to two hours in the private dining room at the Student Center on the Lincoln Park Campus, May 12. More than two dozen students attended the event organized by the Student Leadership Institute and the Vincent on Leadership: The Hay Project.

Gainer responded to the students’ questions on leadership with amazing candor, providing insights from his long career in law enforcement and the position he currently holds. Open-mindedness, honesty, and empathy are key ingredients of good leadership, he said.

On following their dreams, he advised, “When you are looking for the next steps, cast your net wide. If your actions don’t come true, don’t quit. Don’t give up!”

The DePaul alumnus advised students to take advantage of internship opportunities, including in his office.

“Listening to the experience of a DePaul graduate was inspiring,” said undergraduate political science major John Omari, who plans to be a lawyer.

Earlier in the day, Gainer met with the Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., DePaul president, who thanked him for hosting a DePaul alumni event on Capitol Hill in April.
