Alcohol Treatment to Legal Defense: Faculty in the News

3 Jun

DePaul faculty are in the news for alcohol treatment and legal defense — no, not for themselves, but for their research and work in the community.

Leonard Jason

Leonard Jason, director of The Center for Community Research (CCR) at DePaul University, received a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the Oxford House model as a method for improving alcohol and drug treatment outcomes among Latinos. Oxford House is a 30-year-old national network of recovery homes.

From the Chi-Town Daily News:

The model works well for English-speaking residents but so far, there have been no homes exclusively for Spanish-speaking residents. A new home in north Illinois that researchers hope will open later this month will be the proving ground.

“If you’re in a house and you don’t speak English and everyone else is speaking English, that’s certainly going to be a barrier,” Jason says.

Andrea Lyon

Andrea Lyon

In other news, the Orlando Sentinel and Miami Herald reported that Andrea Lyon, a clinical professor of law and director of DePaul’s Center for Justice in Capital Cases, joined the defense team for Casey Anthony, a Florida woman charged with murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Lyon has defended more than 30 potential capital cases at the trial level and has taken 19 through penalty phase, winning all 19.

The Center for Justice in Capital Cases is just one of the College of Law’s clinical programs, which enable students to sharpen their legal skills and knowledge while working with community members.

Sorry, but I thought everyone/where was broke ?
So, now, we’ve got 1.4 Million smakers to give away ?
And yet, all this time, many of us have been begging, pleading, trying to convince both CANADIAN, USA & UK Governments to pass legislation for mandatory health warning labels on all liquor containers ????
But, gee………..why do that………..why not just dip into the empty pockets of Government money and throw some more away !

May God help us all & hopefully real soon too !
