All That Jazz: Alumni Makin’ Music

8 Sep

darwinnoguera_mwA couple of DePaul School of Music alumni recently earned some rave reviews in the jazz scene. Pianist Darwin Noguera‘s (MUS ’06) album The Gardener garnered praise from All About Jazz:

The Gardener is a very strong outing for Noguera and his entire ensemble—a bold and refreshing look at the Latin jazz genre from an artist who will, no doubt, continue on his musical evolution for many years to come.

The full review and youtube clip of Noguero is available on the All About Jazz website.

Rudresh Mahanthappa (MM ’98) was named “Alto Saxophonist of the Year” in the Jazz Journalists Association’s 2009 Jazz Awards. Meanwhile, his recording, Kinsmen, earned a listing as a top jazz album in DownBeat Magazine’s 57th Annual Critics Choice Awards. (By the way, you might want to check out our previous interview with Rudresh.)

Nice work, fellas!

Not too long ago, the DePaul Jazz Ensemble got some play on Chicago’s WGN9 — check out the video clip. The group will be performing big band tunes live during a private performance for School of Music alumni at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago’s historic Dearborn Station. Get all the details about this exclusive event on the School of Music website. So slick back you hair, slip into your buckle shoes and we’ll see you there!
